Authorization Amount

The authorization amount is the dollar amount approved by the credit card issuer in a specific credit card transaction. Generally, the authorization amount is equal to the amount of the purchase made by the cardholder. However, with transactions that require authorization before a purchase may be initiated, such as paying for gas at the pump, an authorization amount greater than the expected purchase is processed by the merchant and credit card issuer.
