Authentication is the process of establishing or confirming that data has come from its claimed source and is genuine, or of corroborating the claimed identity of a communicating party. In financial transactions, this generally includes verifying the authenticity of the identity of an individual, their address, and phone number. Authentication is used as a fraud prevention tool in credit card transactions. Authentication is not the same as authorization.
